Dark and disturbing psychological horror game
The Overseer: Field Trials is a premium adventure PC game by an indie developer who goes by the name Mars. It is a first-person psychological horror experience that takes cues from Japanese myth and folklore. In it, players will take on the role of paranormal investigators taking on trial missions to identify strange anomalies inside a controlled environment.
Field training
In The Overseer: Field Trials, you are essentially a paranormal investigator in training. To prepare for the job, you will undergo a field trial inside a controlled environment. The first part involves memorizing the layout and placement of objects during the first loop and reporting anything strange in succeeding ones. There are more than 50 anomalies to identify and watch out for.
The main catch is that you have to report anomalies successfully multiple times to pass. Missing just one will reset all your progress, and you'll have to start over ala permadeath. Having said that, the gameplay is a bit short. Depending on your pace and how you play, you can expect a full playthrough will only last under an hour.
Eerie and nerve-wracking
Despite its short runtime, The Overseer: Field Trials is a solid horror experience that provides a disturbing and unnerving experience from start to finish. The nod to Japanese culture is a nice touch that makes it more interesting. If you're a fan of these types of games, give this one a shot. Recommended.
